The very small moment of interaction that this entire story is based around has made me look at the way I translate my thoughts to others. This brief conversation honestly could have had a much bigger psychological impact than I imagined. A seven year old can’t live happily thinking that all of her friends are going to forget about her, and that relationships are expendable.

The concept of self-love is tricky. Of course we should be happy with who we are. We should love who we are more than we love anyone else -- right? After all, we spend more time with ourselves than we do literally any other person. It’s a ridiculous thought but it’s true. Furthermore, most of us spend much of our lives struggling to identify who we really are.

Under Lahrmedia, MikeLahrman.com will function as a blog for written (Off The Mike) content, while new episodes of The Boots Off Podcast (Miked Up content) will return very soon. I’m always looking for guests to share their military-to-civilian transition stories, so please share this with anyone you know who may be interested.
